Created in partnership with Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP), a nonprofit organization that has awarded $46 million in scholarships to culinary arts students, Avero’s annual Externship is a two-day program during which two New York area high school students discover the latest culinary trends, learn how to use restaurant management software, and gain invaluable career counseling. We are thrilled to announce this year’s recipients: Genesis De Leon and Heidy Mota, both of Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx.
Avero and C-CAP selected the two winners from a group of highly skilled high school seniors currently in New York City public school culinary arts programs — they were all required to participate in an annual cooking competition, write essays, and collect recommendations in order to be considered. This year, Avero was also able to award a cash scholarship to an additional student, La-Keema Dupree, also of Harry S. Truman High School.
The externship and scholarship, along with countless other scholarships from culinary leaders and organizations totaling over $600,000, were distributed today during the annual C-CAP Awards Breakfast at The Pierre Hotel in New York.
“This event is incredibly moving and inspiring,” said Douglas Hsieh, President and CFO of Avero and C-CAP Board Member. “It’s an honor to be part of this organization and see firsthand the impact we have on young chefs, their families and their educators.”
Avero is thrilled to expand our culinary student scholarship offerings this year, and we look forward to hosting two of the students in our office this summer. Please join us in congratulating Genesis, Heidy and La-Keema!
Correction: Due to last-minute scheduling conflicts, Genesis De Leon is unable to attend the 2016 Externship program. In her place will be Darlene Reyes of Food and Finance High School in New York City.
