As the leading restaurant software company, Avero takes pride in our unique “foodie” culture. We recognize that there are many people in this city who struggle every day to get the proper nutrients, so we participate in City Harvest events throughout the year, most recently the Union Square Greenmarket Rescue.
At this year’s Greenmarket Rescue we collected leftover produce from greenmarket vendors to be delivered to neighborhoods that lack access to nutritionally adequate foods. As a team, we went around the market and engaged farmers in the donation effort by telling them about City Harvest. If they were interested, we left them with several City Harvest donation bags (which can hold up to 35 pounds of food) and agreed to return to collect them later that evening.
We collected over 5,000 pounds of donations, which was then transported to the City Harvest neighborhoods that experience “Food Insecurity”, which refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members; limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. This year, City Harvest is prediected to collect 46 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food will be delivered free of charge to more than 500 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes, helping to feed the nearly 2 million New Yorkers.
Avero is proud to have contributed to such an important effort, and we look forward to continuing to serve in the fight against hunger in the future.
