The Avero Index tracks year-over-year same-store sales performance of restaurants representing different cuisines, venue types, and average checks, nationally and in several specific markets.
December 2017 Highlights
Nationally, restaurants closed out the year with another strong month of sales. This December saw restaurant sales beat out last December’s sales by 0.7%. This month continues a three-month trend of higher-performing 2017 sales.
The capital has once again seen the strongest increase in sales of all the cities examined in the Avero Index. D.C. continued its year-long upward trend with a 9.6% increase in sales this December compared to 2016.
Las Vegas was the only city in the Avero Index that had worse performance in December 2017 versus 2016 – a decrease of -7.3%. Our in-house Las Vegas expert, Adam Nesto, Senior Account Executive, Casinos and Nightlife, attributes this decrease to continued loss of conventions in Vegas after the shooting in October and the fact that New Year’s Eve fell on a Sunday this year. New Year’s generally brings a significant boom in restaurant business to the city of lights, but as it fell on the end of the weekend this year, there were far fewer visitors celebrating in Vegas.
Despite multiple wild fires in the greater Los Angeles area this month, like the Skirball fire at the beginning of the month and the massive Thomas fire shortly thereafter, restaurant sales increased this December compared to 2016. Restaurants saw a boost of 5.4% in sales across the city.
