Every day Avero works with top hotel and restaurant operators to help them in their business, but we also support the work that they do to make the world a better place. Four Seasons generously supports the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research, and Avero supports both every year by participating in the Terry Fox Run, a 5K run in Central Park.
At just 18 years old, Canadian boy Terry Fox learned that due to bone cancer his right leg would have to be amputated above the knee. During his ordeal, Terry became convinced that a cure for cancer could be found through research, but funds were in short supply. Terry decided to run 6,000 miles across Canada to raise money for cancer research, so on April 12, 1980 at St. Johns, Newfoundland, Terry dipped his new artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and began what he called the “Marathon of Hope”. For the next 143 days he ran 26 miles per day, and Four Seasons donated free accommodations at all of his stops along the way. Terry achieved 3,300 miles until, on September 1, 1980 near Thunder Bay, Ontario, he was forced to stop. The cancer spread to his lungs, and he died on June 28, 1981, just a month shy of his 23rd birthday.
Since Terry’s death, thousands of runs have been held in Canada and throughout the world in his name to raise funds for cancer research. All proceeds for the Terry Fox Run NYC are donated to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. We look forward to continuing our support of the Terry Fox Run in the future.
